|
The Breathmobile®, is an "asthma clinic on wheels," that provides FREE
asthma diagnosis, education, treatment and medications to children with
asthma and allergies at their school site.
This project was developed by the California Chapter of the
Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)
to address the rising morbidity and mortality rates of asthma
in high risk disadvantaged children.
The Breathmobiles® reach out to low-income and uninsured populations who
often receive care only in emergency rooms.
Since inception, the Breathmobiles® have collectively treated logged more than 120,000 patient visits!

|
The first Breathmobile® was launched November 16, 1995 at LAC+USC
Medical Center in Los Angeles and in 2002, became the first
disease specific care program in the United States to be credentialed
by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO).
A thorough onsite review of the healthcare process, data collection,
analysis, and performance improvement process led to the credentialing by JCAHO.

There are now eleven Breathmobiles® throughout California serving nearly 300
elementary, middle, high schools and several comprehensive health clinics.
The Breathmobile® has also been replicated in 3 other cities including Phoenix,
Baltimore and Mobile, Alabama. Each Breathmobile® visits approximately 25 school
sites and returns every 6-8 weeks to provide continuous asthma care. The
Breathmobiles® treat more than 5,000 children a year throughout California and
has a goal to enter about 1000 new patients per year.
